Effects of elevation-dependent climate warming on intra- and inter-specific growth synchrony in mixed mountain forests

چکیده
Spruce-fir-beech mixed forests cover a large area in European mountain regions, with high ecological and socio-economic importance. As elevation-zone systems they are highly affected by climate change, which is modifying species growth patterns productivity shifts among species. The extent to associated tree can access resources grow asynchronously may affect their resistance persistence under change. Intra-specific synchrony annual good indicator of specific dependence on environmental conditions variability. However, little attention has been paid explore the role inter-specific asynchrony adaptation Here we used database 1790 tree-ring series collected from 28 experimental plots spruce-fir-beech across Europe how spatio-temporal intra- relate variation during past century. We further examined whether response inter-annual fluctuations depended site conditions. found that was always lower than intra-specific synchrony, for both (inter-annual fluctuations) low frequency (mid- long-term) variation, suggesting between niche complementarity at temporal levels. Intra- synchronies significantly changed along elevation, being greater higher elevations. Moreover, warming likely induced changes but effect varied elevation gradient. strongly intensified elevations due drying Our results suggest be as an conclude mixtures should preferred against mono-specific buffer change impacts regions.

Elevation-dependent warming in mountain regions of the world
NATURE CLIMATE CHANGE | VOL 5 | MAY 2015 | www.nature.com/natureclimatechange It is well known that the rate of temperature change with increased levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is amplified at high latitudes, but there is growing evidence that the rate of warming is also amplified with elevation, such as in mountain environments. This elevation-dependent warming (EDW) has importan...
متن کاملClimate change effects on economic growth: mixed empirical evidence
West Africa is vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This paper analyzed the impacts of climate change on economic growth in Anglophone West Africa with similar background, during the periods 1969-2016. Five growth model equations have been developed to incorporate climate change variables into the model. Panel data estimations such as the fixed effect model, random effect model and Haus...
متن کاملEffects of inter and intra row spacing on growth, yield and yield components of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.)
A field experiment was conducted to assess the optimum inter- and intra-row spacing on growth, yield and yield component of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) in 2014/15 cropping season at Wondo Genet Agricultural Research Center experimental site (at Wondo Genet station). Two inter-row spacing (60 and 90 cm) and three intra-row spacing (30, 60 and 90 cm) were evaluated using two varieties, WG-Hi...
متن کاملInter- and Intra-Specific Density-Dependent Effects on Life History and Development Strategies of Larval Mosquitoes
We explored how inter- and intra-specific competition among larvae of two temporary-pool mosquito species, Culiseta longiareolata and Ochlerotatus caspius, affect larval developmental strategy and life history traits. Given that their larvae have similar feeding habits, we expected negative reciprocal inter-specific interactions. In a microcosm experiment, we found sex-specific responses of lar...
